pairing: Katsuki Bakugou/Midoriya Izuku
A/N: i switched how i referred to katsuki and izuku in the fic…its a very vague change but i need to for the sake of the parent’s introduction and bakugou’s mom STILL being nameless >:’)

“Th-thank you!” Izuku blurted.
Katsuki stopped what he was doing and turned to look at Izuku with the same wide eyed stare from the park that night.
“Thank you…for saving me yesterday,” Izuku continued, calmer, “I was really scared, but you were really cool anyways, and so I just… wanted to say…thank you.”
A light pop on the head is all it took for the boy’s face to go quickly from apathetic to contorted in annoyance.
“What the hell was that? Introduce yourself properly!”
The boy, Katsuki gave an irritated huff at his mother before straightening his back to try again like she’d demanded.
“My name is Katsuki Bakugou. S‘Nice meeting you.”
“That’s a lot better,” his mother smiled at him before turning back to Izuku’s mother.
“You didn’t get to meet this kid before because he was out trying to explore the terrain,” she gave Katsuki a friendly slap on the back, “I can’t keep the lil’bugger still for a second, he’s like a stray animal.”
“Ah, Izuku’s the same way, he’s always heading off on his own,” Inko responded with a laugh, placing a gentle hand on her son’s scruffy head, “but he tends to stay around in the same place. There’s a little park a few blocks away that he really loves so I never worry too much.”
Suddenly Inko’s tone changed and she gave a little gasp of discovery.
“Say Izuku, you could show Katsuki-kun the park! It’d be a really nice-”
“Been there.”
Immediately as if on cue, everyone turned to look at Katsuki quizzically after his abrupt interruption and only Izuku jumped slightly.
“Ah? Katsuki, you’ve already seen it?” Inko questioned, visibly also a little taken aback by his bluntness.
“Yeah. Went yesterday.”
“Oh now that’s just strange,” her voice tinged with concern, “Izuku’s practically there all day it’s a wonder you two didn’t run into each other.”
Jumping again, Izuku nervously shifted his eyes to the other boy and waited for his response. Without a doubt Katsuki was going to tell both their parents about that boy and his friend, and that was the last thing he wanted. There’s no way Katsuki’s mom would think he was cool now if she learned her son had to come save him. Katsuki singlehandedly ran them off just by sitting there while Izuku couldn’t do anything, it was embarrassing, but there’s no way Katsuki was going to pass up rubbing it in the parents faces how heroic he was, there’s no way he’d-
“Yeah, weird.” Katsuki responded cutting into his thoughts with a shrug.
That was it?
Weird?
Izuku could only stare at the boy in shock.
Was it maybe a coincidence after all? Izuku was once again left wondering if what transpired was real at the boy’s easy dismissal of it all, but he couldn’t shake off that piercing look of his. As unique as all the people in the world were now, that alone was as memorable of an impression enough for Izuku to know he’d recognized this boy. This was without a doubt the same boy who’d came to his rescue at the park. So why was he suddenly pretending it didn’t happen?
Maybe he’s embarrassed too? But why would he be embarrassed? Izuku considered asking the question himself, but he was once again left in a jumble of thoughts staring at Katsuki nervously and tugging at the bottom of his shirt uncomfortably.
Inko, noticing Izuku’s hesitance, once again paved a social opening for him.
“Say Izuku,” she cooed, “why don’t you show Katsuki your room? I’m sure there’s a bunch of cool stuff for you two to do up there.”
“Oh, Good idea!” Katsuki’s mom added, gently pushing Katsuki in the direction of Izuku, “go on and explore around with Izuchan for a bit, kiddo.”
Izuku stepped back embarrassed at Katsuki suddenly being pushed so closely into his space, but Katsuki continued to seem unfazed, only looking back at his mother after the action and then turning to glare right back Izuku with the same dead stare.
“S-sure!” Izuku squeaked, backpedaling from Katsuki’s presence, “m-my room is upstairs…I can show you the way…”
“Okay.” Katsuki responded immediately and easily.
Inko gave a quiet sigh mixed with relief and exasperation. When Katsuki’s mother came to stand by her giving a friendly pat on the shoulder, she found it in her to mention one last thing before leaving the boys to themselves.
“Izuku, if you two want or need anything Bakugou-san and I will be in the kitchen, okay?” she smiled before finishing, “You two get along now!”
At that, Inko and Katsuki’s mother walked away side by side heading towards the kitchen, leaving Katsuki and Izuku staring at each other in awkward silence at the doorway.
“U-um…” Izuku stammered, looking around nervously to avoid eye contact, “l-let’s go…it’s this way…!”
Katsuki only grunted in response and followed Izuku without a word.
Nearing the stairs Izuku could hear the quiet laughter of his mother getting drowned out by Katsuki’s mother’s louder voice and louder laughter. Her presence in the house managed to be both comforting and overwhelmingly intimidating even out of eyeshot. It was definitely a strange mixture, but one Izuku could appreciate. Her son on the other hand…
“So… if we just go up here…” Izuku started once they reached the stairs looking up at the tall pinnacle. He’d lived with it forever but it still felt like a long way up, it was probably worst for Katsuki, “my room is-,”
Izuku’s introduction was interrupted when a flash of blonde rushed passed him, and before he knew it Katsuki had already run to the top of the staircase, looking down at Izuku blankly.
“Oh wow, O-okay,” Izuku stammered again overwhelmed, “I’m coming…!”
Katsuki only blinked and disappeared from sight at the top of the stairs, clearly deciding to explore the area ahead himself.
Scary.
That was the only word Izuku could peg on Katsuki right now, knowing the boy was preoccupying himself upstairs Izuku took a quick detour to grab his All Might doll from the table for comfort.
“All Might, what would you do…” Izuku muttered to the toy quietly, making his way up the stairs.
Izuku came up the flight calmly and by the time he reached the top Katsuki was already peeking at every room in the hallway before noticing Izuku’s presence.
“Too slow, Izuku!” Katsuki scolded.
“W-what…?”
“Too,” Katsuki stepped up close to Izuku’s face and balled up his fist, bumping him on the top of head, “slow!”
“Ow.” Izuku whined, the bump hadn’t actually hurt too bad and was soft more than anything, but he felt it enough to react accordingly.
Too slow? What, we’re they racing?
“I… don’t understand…” Izuku muttered.
Katsuki, who had been blank stared and apathetic looking since arriving was now looking at Izuku roughly with furrowed brows and a visible pout. After glaring at Izuku a little longer he just clicked his teeth and turned around.
“Whatever, which one’s your room?”
SCARY.
Again, the word shot itself into his head at Katsuki’s bluntness. This boy was too confusing and erratic, how does anyone manage to be quiet in one moment and explosive in the next? Izuku wasn’t sure how much more of this he could take.
“Um…” Izuku looked at all the opened doors to see if Katsuki had already invited himself into his room, but he had only peeked into the bathroom, the guest room, and that one extra bedroom that only existed as a storage. Everywhere but his bedroom which was obviously ahead of the hall, clearly marked on the door with All Might stickers.
“Th-this way… this is my room over here,” Izuku stuttered, walking past Katsuki and making another hard effort to avoid eye contact with him.
The minute Izuku made it to the door and opened it, he felt a mighty rush of comfort over take him again entering his own familiar space. The walls plastered with All Might posters, his drawings of heroes and him fighting with heroes hanging over his bed and desk, and all kinds of his toys strewn across the floor. This was his safe haven, and all the stress he was feeling drained in one fell swoop.
“Oh woooow you’ve gots lots of stuff in here, huh?” Katsuki’s voice startled him as he came from behind and nudged past Izuku to get past the doorway, all the stress returning with it.
“Pretty neat,” Katsuki observed, picking up one of Izuku’s rare Eraserhead dolls from the ground and then tossing it to the side.
“Ah! H-hey be careful…those we’re taken out of stores my mom says there aren’t anymore in-”
Katsuki ignored Izuku, moving onto the next thing and hoping onto his computer chair.
“You’ve got the chair that SPINS!” Katsuki laughed spinning around quickly in the seat.
It wasn’t like Izuku had never spun around in his computer chair, but something about Katsuki twirling around in his seat felt dangerous. Izuku, still on edge and avoiding eye contact once again, he tried to get control of the other boy.
“Yeah it does that but…be careful I don’t know if it will break or-”
“Oh what’s this?”
Izuku probably should have kept his eyes on Katsuki, because the boy had left the seat and was suddenly close behind him. Katsuki had a hold on Izuku’s wrist and immediately swiped his All Might doll from his hands.
“Ah, wait-,”
“Don’t worry I’m not gonna break it,” Katsuki groaned irritably, eyeing the doll long and hard. Izuku’s heart was rushing in distress and every instinct in his body was telling him to snatch the toy back, but instead he stood frozen in stunned silence as he watched Katsuki closely observing his doll.
“This is the one that just came out isn’t it?” Katsuki finally concluded after a long silence.
“Y-yeah,” Izuku responded, feeling a little better about an opening, “I was really excited for it so my mom bought it the day it came to the store…”
“I couldn’t find one of these anywhere, they’re all gone.”
Izuku stiffened, unsure of what he’d have to do to forcibly take his doll back.
“That’s pretty cool, Izuku.”
There was that word again, cool.
“You…you really think so?”
“Yeah!” Katsuki exclaimed turning to smile at Izuku, “Super cool!”
He tossed All Might back to Izuku suddenly and he scrambled to catch it safely. After securing it in his hands he looked at his doll with a fond smile.
Super cool.
When he looked back up, Katsuki had gone back to looking around his bedroom and randomly picking up things, but there was a calmer air now, and the tension Izuku was feeling had decreased.
Taking in a deep breath, he figured now was a better time than never.
“Ka-Katsu..”
“Haaaah? What is it?” he responded, seemingly disinterested and rummaging through Izuku’s things.
Katsuki was definitely going to start running the flow of the conversation again if he didn’t just say what he needed to say already. Biting his tongue, he forced the words out.
Katsuki looked at Izuku long and hard, his expression still unreadable. After being stared at for long enough Izuku started flushing red.
“U-uh…that’s… that’s it… I mean…uh…”
“I didn’t save you.”
Izuku couldn’t grasp why, but something inside of him dropped.
“What?”
“I didn’t save you.”
“N-no! You did! I saw you!” Izuku stammered, his voice pitched and heated, “You were there, at the swings and you ran off those mean guys! Remember?”
Katsuki’s face still looked blank so gesturing forward and clenching his fists Izuku fought on,
“That one kid could do a thing to metal with his hands?” He used his own hand to crush the air and imitate the motion, “A-and you weren’t scared at all! Y-you stood up to them, and you were really cool doing it!”
Izuku hadn’t realized he had gotten face to face with Katsuki until he saw him leaning back slightly and his now exasperated glare was piercing into his own closer than what he was normally comfortable with. He also hadn’t realized he had been raising his voice until it he caught himself slightly huffing in exhaustion.
This boy had been effectively frustrating Izuku in the few minutes they had been around each other, and all those emotions exploded in Katsuki’s face at his lack of credit.
“Tch.” Katsuki hissed, placing his hand on Izuku’s shoulder, “I didn’t do anything, Izuku.”
“But you-,”
“It was my swing, not my problem if those guys were jerks to you,” Katsuki shrugged and Izuku just stared at him, a little hurt but mostly unsatisfied with his answer.
“And besides,” Katsuki magically whipped a piece of paper from his hands out of nowhere and shoved it at Izuku’s chest before waving it in front of him, “what about this?”
On the paper was one of Izuku’s drawings, it had a smiling stick figure with scraggly green and black hair punching a huge blob of what was supposed to be a monster.
“Ah! That’s my-!”
“You want to be a hero don’t you?” Katsuki cut him off.
Izuku looked from him to the picture nervously before looking down.
“…Yes…”
Of course he did. Being a hero was all Izuku ever wanted. Anyone can see the simple dream of it all consumed his life everyday, but he wasn’t sure what that question had to do with anything.
“Well then listen up, Heroes. Don’t. Get. Saved,” Katsuki shoved the paper back at Izuku for him to take, “have you ever seen All Might have to get saved?”
Katsuki pointed in the direction of Izuku’s doll in his hand and his gaze followed. The #1 hero All Might took on challenges any average person and even the average hero couldn’t ever dream of. He saved other’s with a smile without breaking a sweat, and the minute he arrived on the scene you knew everyone in the surrounding area was going to be safe. All Might never needs a savior, he’s always everyone else’s savior. Clenching his hands around his doll tighter Izuku knew what the answer was already.
“…No.”
“Yeah! No! Never!” Katsuki made a pose turning away from Izuku and holding his fist in front of his face, “All Might wins, heroes win!”
Turning back around, Katsuki glared at Izuku with the same furrowed eyebrows and pout that Izuku had seen back in the hallway.
“I won. I came, and I won what I came for,” Katsuki narrowed his eyes at Izuku, “so are you a damsel or a hero?”
“I-,”
“Because I’m going to be a hero, the best one!” puffing out his chest and hitting it with his fist he concluded, “and you can count on it!”
Izuku considered responding, but nothing came out and he only stood stunned and overwhelmed again as Katsuki walked past him, exiting his bedroom.
“I’m hungry!” he screamed from the hallway suddenly, “Where are the snacks? I’m STARVING!”
“Oh! Katsuki you’re hungry?” Izuku could hear his mom’s worried tone quietly from downstairs, “What about Izuku? Is he hungry too?”
“I dunno.” Katsuki’s now distanced voice responded.
“You didn’t ASK him?” Katsuki’s mom yelled.
Izuku broke himself from his spell to head downstairs before Katsuki got himself in trouble with his mom.
Scary.
The word came back, but this time Izuku could finally deduct why from all the things he learned from his interactions with Katsuki today.
Katsuki is unpredictable. Katsuki is confusing to understand. Katsuki is rude. And Katsuki is also kind of annoying.
But most of all, despite all these things Katsuki somehow manages to be terrifyingly…cool.
He decides not to think about it too much anymore as he entered the kitchen and saw Katsuki being caught with his ear pinched in his mother’s fingers.
“I-I’m hungry too! Yeah!”
—————————————————————————————-
The skies were burnt orange from the setting sun, and even though it wasn’t too dark out quite yet the streetlights we’re turned on all across the neighborhood, making for an easy and comforting walk home.
Katsuki and his mother had just departed the Midoriya household after staying for a late lunch. After a bit it seemed Katsuki and Izuku had exhausted all interest in playing upstairs and had clung to their mother’s side the rest of the playdate. But it seemed it wasn’t all in vain, because despite avoiding each other Katsuki and Izuku had become visibly a little comfortable with each other. Katsuki screaming questions at Izuku about different parts of the house and Izuku, who had been jumpy before, would either scream back an answer or disappear flustered in his direction to warn him not to mess with certain things.
It wasn’t perfect progress but it was progress nonetheless, who could expect them to become friends right away? Inko was convinced just from today that Katsuki would be a good influence on Izuku.
“He’s such a shy boy, and he’s always caught in his own little world” she had said fondly but tinged with worry, “It makes it hard for him to make friends because he’s so content by himself, but I think Katsuki could pull him out of there a little bit.”
Katsuki’s mom could see the logic, but also she thought Inko was thinking a little too highly of her son. Because in the end, if you just took out the shyness, Katsuki was the exact same way.
“The Midoriya family sure is a nice bunch aren’t they?” Katsuki’s mom laughed loudly looking below on her son who was holding onto her hand and looking down at the sidewalk, “Izuchan seemed especially nice, did you like him?”
“Why do you keep calling him that,” Katsuki muttered pouting and looking away.
“Huh? What was that? You have to speak up Katsuki,”
“’Izuchan’, why do you keep saying that! It’s dumb.”
“Oh? Are you jealous?” his mother smirked, “Do you want me to start calling you Kacchan? Kaaaaacchan?”
“NOOOO, STOP!” Katsuki screeched using the fist that wasn’t holding onto his mother’s hand to throw hard punches at her. As hard as a 3 year old could manage anyways.
“Oh nooo, ow stop! I’m sorry, I’m sorry! No ‘Kacchans’ anymore I swear!” his mother mocked distress but poorly hid her laughter. Katsuki eased off punching her slowly, watching for any sudden moves and smirked before sticking his tongue out at her.
“You’re a big meanie,” Katsuki’s mother admonished, giving her son a light thump on the head in retaliation, “you’re gonna make everyone scared of you if you keep it up.”
“Heroes are SUPPOSED to be scary,” Katsuki boomed projecting his fist forward to imitate a punch, “the enemy won’t know what hit ‘em when I’m around!”
“Well you should still practice how to be a little nicer,” his mom huffed, “if you don’t Izucha- Izuku’s gonna beat you to the punch you know? No one likes a mean hero.”
“Izuku’s a big baby,” Katsuki stated flatly, ignoring the rest of his mother’s point.
“See? This is exactly what I’m talking about, but I mean,” Katsuki mom looked up to the sky as if considering something, “that boy really is kind of skittish, it’s hard to be a hero like that.”
Katsuki feeling like his point had been confirmed made a ‘hmph’ sound and puffed out his chest. In quick retaliation at having accidentally validating her son’s comment, Katsuki’s mom lightly popped him on the head.
“But when he grows out of it you won’t be prepared you little brat,” she hissed, “I’m serious – try being a little easier to approach why don’t you? Especially for Izuku, you’re gonna run the poor kid off.”
“Whatever,” Katsuki muttered rubbing the top of his head.
Both refusing to run the conversation on any further, Katsuki and his mother hand in hand continued down the street back home. With the sun setting quicker in the horizon, the first day of Katsuki and Izuku’s playdate signaled its end.
