I thought the same, but I’ll go one step further. I think Bakugo sees Izuku’s potencial —though he would never admit— and he’s afraid that a “useless kid”, someone “inferior” without quirk could surpass him.
Moreover Izuku is nice and caring to him. He tried to helped him when he could do it by himself, anyone else would say thank you, but Katsuki took it as an offense. Why? I also think he’s scared to admit his weakness but I also think he felt underrated by Deku.
He thought Izuku was understimating him and thinking they were equals, something that such an egocentric person as Katsuki —that clarely makes a distinction with those with quirk and those without— can’t comprehend. And that’s why he hates Deku: but yeah, obviously he’s scared of him because he can see the weak points he tries to cover up.
PD: I also want to add that Bakugo is jealous of Izuku’s relationship with All Might. Now that he has realised that what Deku had told him was true, he can’t help but ask himself why did he chose Izuku instead of him. More hate points for poor Deku who did nothing wrong.
Hi! I’m one of the mods who worked on this post on @explodo-smash and I did want to respond to you but to avoid too much clutter on the blog I brought it here.
I did want to start of by saying I apologize if I misunderstand anything you’ve said because I thought about the correct way to respond and I wasn’t sure of what the end point would end up being other than me wanting to emphasize some points.
Firstly, it’s never been explicitly stated or shown that Bakugou is jealous of Izuku and All Might’s connection. (In fact it seems more like he respects it [avoiding confronting Izuku again about it] [Asking All Might and respecting his oath to silence])
It’s never been shown Bakugou particularly cares for any of Izuku’s relationships (Except with Todoroki, where he just wanted his attention on him rather than Izuku since they all saw each other as challenges to surpass – a triple rivalry at the time.) So to make that assumption is very dangerous!
Because the fact is, as far as we’ve seen Bakugou has already accepted the connection between All Might and Izuku, and likewise has accepted Izuku as a wall he needs to conquer like anyone else in Class 1-A. (Slur in the next cap)
We’ve seen that the “egocentric” part of him had to disappear, and early on in the series too. Bakugou understands strength and respects hard work. He sees everyone in his class as people who have made it this far, and that includes Izuku. He’s not underestimating anyone at this point in the story is really just taking all his challenges head on with the intent of winning. So I’d say everything the “Ego” he had before protected has gotten replaced with “Pride”. (Just as damaging, not as blinded.)
And Izuku hurts his pride.
In just the first few chapters Bakugou has had to come to accept that Izuku is strong enough to be at this level. That stopped being the issue.
No, I really do think the issue is as simple as everytime he ends up having to deal with Izuku, the kid dredges up bits and pieces of himself he tries to pretend aren’t there.
That he isn’t invincible, that there are people stronger than him, that sometimes needs that hand.
He’s over the quirkless thing, that ended forever ago. At this point I’m sure his “hate”/”anger” towards Deku has become less “You’re weak” and more “I might be/I’m becoming weak.”
And it all goes back to one person, and it scares him.
But we know the last thing Izuku believes in is Kacchan being “weak”. It’s not at all what he’s trying to do, but he’s unfortunately become the biggest piece in Katsuki’s insecurities and fears for whatever reason.
And this is what’s about to become interesting soon enough I’m sure and that’s what the meta we’d written hoped to sort of allude to!
